ACPS Will Meet State Instructional Hours Requirement Without Adding Minutes To School Day

All Alexandria City Public Schools students and parents can look forward to an uninterrupted spring break and an end to the school year as scheduled on June 20. ACPS has learned that it will not need to adjust instructional time at middle schools to make up for missed snow days. Based on additional information from the Virginia Department of Education regarding the calculation of instructional time, ACPS will comply with the number of hours required for students to complete the school year and therefore will not need to adjust the current school year calendar at this time.

The current school year calendar consists of 183 student days and factors in three potential snow make-up days that could take place during scheduled teacher work days. Therefore, ACPS will meet state requirements with the two scheduled make-up days to reach the state instructional hour requirement. The Alexandria City School Board in January approved scheduled snow make-up days: March 14 and April 11 for traditional calendar schools and Feb. 28 and March 21 for modified calendar schools.
