Alexandria City School Board To Approve Appointment Of Dr. Alvin Crawley As Superintendent

The Alexandria City School Board plans to approve the hiring of Dr. Alvin L. Crawley as Alexandria City Public Schools' new Superintendent of Schools at the March 6, scheduled School Board meeting.

"I am unequivocally honored to have this opportunity," said Crawley. "As superintendent, I plan to continue to be very visible, responsive and accountable to all ACPS stakeholders. We have begun serious, thoughtful efforts to enhance the educational experience for our students, and I will work tirelessly to continue to move this division forward."

Crawley was named interim superintendent in October 2013. Since that time he has kept up an intense schedule, meeting with students, teachers, parents and staff from each of the division's 19 schools. Prior to joining ACPS, Dr. Crawley served as the interim superintendent of Prince George's County Public Schools. He spent the majority of his career in education in Arlington Public Schools, where he held top roles including assistant superintendent for student services and director of special education.

"Since Dr. Crawley arrived in Alexandria, he impressed us with his calm, collaborative and positive style while working towards solutions that are best for all our children," said Karen A. Graf, School Board Chair. "Our board unanimously selected Dr. Crawley from a pool of top candidates and we are thrilled to have him lead ACPS."

There were a total of 56 applicants (26 sitting superintendents), identified by the superintendent search firm, who wanted the position of Superintendent of Schools for the City of Alexandria. Six were recommended to the School Board and four were interviewed before Dr. Crawley was selected.

BWP & Associates search consultant Kevin Castner said, "This was one of the strongest and largest applicant pools we have ever worked with. This signals to me that Alexandria City is an attractive place to live and work. Dr. Crawley rose to the top of the well qualified group of applicants to earn the superintendent position."

The School Board will host a Meet & Greet event for the new superintendent on Wednesday, March 26 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Minnie Howard Campus.
