At the request of the Alexandria Branch of the American Association of University Women on Dec. 9, 2014, Alexandria Mayor William Euille and the City Council issued a proclamation designating Dec. 8-12, 2014, as Computer Science Education Week. Since 1881, AAUW has been one of the nation’s leading voices promoting education and equity for women and girls. The goal of Computer Science Education Week is to call attention to the need for K-12 computer science education and to the need for school climates that nurture girls’ participation in Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics activities. Computer Science Education Week is observed each year in recognition of Rear Admiral Grace Hopper’s birthday. RADM Hopper was a pioneer in the field of computer science, and was the co-inventor of the computer language COBOL.
