Ben & Jerry’s Offensive “Marketing Slogan”

Ranter: Patryce Ercolano

Wow - I just received an email from someone who shared with me that they went into a Ben & Jerry's ice cream store in Alexandria, Virginia and the salesgirls were wearing t-shirts that read in the front "First time at Ben & Jerry's?" on the back "Let us pop your cherry...Garcia".  What message are they trying to send?  This is outrageous on so many levels, but to advertise this in an ice cream store where young children frequent is just appalling.  I am sure I'm not the only mother/daughter/sister to be outraged by this. I’m also certain that fathers/grandfathers/sons also feel the same way.  I hope you will communicate our disgust with their "cutesy slogan", which is very offensive.  It's also interesting to note that on the Ben & Jerry website under the "Board of Directors" link that they are "Preserving and expanding Ben & Jerry's social mission, brand integrity and product quality.”  They really need to rethink their “social mission”!  I among other people that received the email notification will no longer be purchasing Ben & Jerry’s ice cream until they remove the references to “popping your cherry”.  Ben & Jerry need to merely think about how they would communicate this message to their children or grandchildren.  I hope the answer is simply that they hadn’t thought about it in this context.
