Former Lieutenant Governor Don Beyer declared victory this evening in the race for Virginia’s Eighth Congressional seat. Surrounded by family and staff, the Congressman-elect took the stage in Crystal City to address a crowd of supporters. Virginia's U.S. Senate race is still too close to call as of 10 p.m.

“My whole life has been leading up to this moment and this mission," Beyer said. "Together, we will move Congress and this nation forward."

Beyer spoke about the core issues he hoped to address as Congressman for Virginia's Eighth District including climate change, income inequality, gun safety and working across the aisle to find bipartisan solutions.

"Because I was born an incurable optimist, I believe that something can be done, and we can be the ones to do it," said Beyer. "We will address each and every one of these problems. Together, we can solve them. Yes, we still can and we must."

Beyer was joined on stage by 24-year incumbent Congressman Jim Moran, who spent the day with his successor, greeting voters at polling stages throughout the district.

"I've often said the Eighth is the smartest district in the country," said Moran. "They've proven that today by electing Don Beyer to Congress. He's the ideal representative for Northern Virginia, with the progressive values we need in Washington. I'm proud to be his constituent."

Beyer thanked the 400-plus volunteers, who reached out to over tens of thousands of voters to help turn out the vote, along with his family, staff, and the over 2,000 individuals who contributed to the campaign, saying: "Your support and hard work have made this the best campaign of our lives. We have loved every minute, and we can't wait to take the next step in this great adventure. On to Capitol Hill!"

Beyer had 65% percent of the vote, with 55% of the precincts reporting.
