Brother’s Brother Foundation And Hope For Lives In Sierra Leone Respond To Ebola Outbreak In West Africa

On Thursday, Oct. 2, 2014 Hope for Lives in Sierra Leone in Germantown, MD and Brother’s Brother Foundation in Merrifield, VA and Pittsburgh, PA will finish loading another donated container of medical supplies and equipment for Connaught Hospital in Freetown, Sierra Leone.

The shipment will be loaded at 2730 Prosperity Avenue, Suite 110, Dock #5, Fairfax, VA 22031 on Thursday, Oct. 2 from 10:30 am - noon.  This is the second medical shipment sponsored by Hope for Lives in Sierra Leone, an organization founded in 2011 and led by Sierra Leonean Americans living in the Washington, DC area.   The shipment includes a large number of face masks, protective gowns and protective gloves as well as general medical supplies to support medical facilities in Sierra Leone that are coping with the Ebola outbreak.  The shipment includes donated supplies from Johns Hopkins Health (Suburban), MedStar Health, AVID Medical and University of Maryland Medical Center.

At least five more 40-foot container shipments will be sent by BBF Pittsburgh in October with additional gowns, gloves, masks, soap and other requested supplies.  Over the past three and one half years BBF has sent 77 containers of supplies and simple medical equipment (almost 500 tons) for use among 220 hospitals and clinics in Africa, including 73 medical facilities in Sierra Leone and Liberia.

BBF is a 56-year old Pittsburgh-based international charity with a newly opened first branch warehouse in Fairfax, Virginia.  BBF has provided over 100,000 tons of medical supplies, textbooks, food, seeds, and other humanitarian supplies to people around the world in over 140 countries.  With the help of gifts from the general public, corporations and foundations, in 2013 BBF sent product contributions to those in need in 64 countries.  These shipments were the equivalent of 252 tractor trailer loads.  Also in 2013, BBF provided supplies for 321 medical and humanitarian hand-carry mission trips.

Forbes Magazine highlighted BBF as one of only four charities with a 100% rating for both fundraising efficiency and charitable commitment of the 50 largest charities reviewed in November 2013.  The Better Business Bureau continues to give BBF its “Wise Giving Alliance Standards” seal of approval.  BBF achieved a 4-star rating for sound fiscal management and commitment to accountability and transparency from Charity Navigator.

Donations to assist with shipping costs are always greatly appreciated.  Credit card donations can be made at www.brothersbrother.org or by calling BBF at 412-321-3160 or at http://hopeforsierraleone.org.  Checks should be made to the Brother's Brother Foundation or Hope for Lives and sent to:
