Santa flipped the switch and the 30-foot tall Del Ray Christmas tree came to life. The tree was donated by businessmen Mango Mike Anderson and his business partner Bill Blackburn.
The Del Ray Business Association also sponsored the placement of 2,000 luminaries along Mt. Vernon Avenue from Hume to Nelson. This tradition began in 2003 as an idea conceived by Nancy Dunning. She was murdered in her Del Ray home before she saw her plans come to fruition but the tradition has continued each year as a tribute to the many contributions she made to Del Ray and to Alexandria.
There were 500 carolers who sang traditional songs for those who gathered to watch the holiday spectacle. The T. C. Williams High School choir performed as well.
