Ed Gillespie, Republican candidate for Virginia’s U.S. Senate seat, conceded the election today to Democratic incumbent Sen. Mark Warner.

The Virginia Department of Elections shows Warner currently leading by 16,540 votes as the canvassing draws to a close. Gillespie said he did not want to put fellow Virginians through a recount. "The numbers just aren't there," he said. “If he believed there is way to win in a recount, he would fight for it.” The cost of a recount would be $25,000.

Gillespie called Warner earlier today to congratulate him on his re-election. Warner commended him on a hard-fought campaign, according to Warner's statement to supporters.
