Alexandria City Public Schools Superintendent Alvin L. Crawley announced George Washington Middle School's new principal and administrative team for the 2014-2015 school year. The new leadership includes Principal Jesse Mazur, currently principal at Audubon Middle and High School in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and Academic Principals Pierrette Hall, Kathryn Madigan and Lance Harrell. Jeannette Jackson, currently the administrative intern at George Washington 1, will be the school's new dean of students.

"Jesse has a record of success as a school administrator in Wisconsin," Dr. Crawley said. "He is a strategic thinker who has constructed student-centered learning environments and assembled strong teams of educators in school divisions similar to our own. We're very happy to have him, along with our highly experienced academic principals and dean of students."

Mazur has served as a principal in Milwaukee Public Schools since 2011, first at Bay View High School and later at Audubon. Mazur worked as an associate principal in the Greendale School District in Wisconsin from 2001 to 2008. He began his career as an educator in 2002 as an instructor at Custer High School and later at Rufus King International Baccalaureate High School, both in Milwaukee.

In February, the Alexandria City School Board unanimously approved the revision of the city's middle school structure to one school per campus. The consolidation structure aims to enhance the academic achievement of middle school students and to maximize administrators' time to focus on student achievement while increasing opportunities for personalization.

Under the new structure, three academic principals will join Mazur at George Washington next year. Since 2013, Hall has served as principal of George Washington 2. Madigan comes to ACPS after serving as school testing coordinator at Arlington County's Barcroft Elementary since 2009. Harrell has served as principal at O.W. Dillon Elementary School in Kentwood, La., since 2012.

Mazur said the student population and reputation drew him to ACPS.

"It seemed like the perfect fit for my experience in both suburban and urban education environments," Mazur said. "There's a great mix of diversity."

Mazur received a teaching degree from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 2002 and a master's in administrative leadership from UW-Milwaukee in 2009.
