Jesse Matthew appeared before a Fairfax County judge today via video link for an arraignment on three felony charges associated with a 2005 sexual assault in Fairfax City. Matthew,32, is charged with Attempted Capital Murder, Abduction with Intent to Defile, and Sexual Penetration With An Object.

Matthew is currently in custody in Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail, charged with Abduction with Intent to Defile, in the case of the 18-year-old University of Virginia student Hannah Graham. Graham’s remains were found on an abandoned farm in southern Albemarle County on Oct. 18.

James Camblos, a Charlottesville attorney representing Matthew on the Graham case, appeared with Matthew today. Camblos submitted a motion requesting a psychiatric evaluation for Matthew. The motion will be taken up at a future date. The judge today appointed a Fairfax public defender as lead counsel with Camblos as co-counsel in the Fairfax case. Matthew did not enter a plea at today’s arraignment.

Matthew will be transported to Fairfax County jail in the next few weeks. He will appear in person for a status hearing on Nov. 14.

Fairfax County Prosecutor Ray Morrogh hopes the Matthew trial will start soon. “It is always good when the criminal justice system works in a speedy fashion,” said Morrogh.
