The Old Dominion Boat Club Select Crew team turned in a strong performance in its first race of the Fall 2014 rowing season, taking first place in the Women’s Youth Eight and performing well across the board in the boys and girls events.
The race was the Head of the Potomac Regatta in Georgetown. Held on Sunday, Sept. 28 on a 2.8 mile winding stretch of river that began by Fletcher’s Cove just above the Key Bridge and ended by the Kennedy Center just before the Roosevelt Bridge, the contest featured club and collegiate rowers from throughout the Mid-Atlantic region competing against the clock to see who could make it down the course the fastest. The beautiful weather and good rowing conditions made it an outstanding experience for rowers and spectators alike.
The ODBC Select Girls First 8 dominated the youth eight event, finishing with a time of 16:12.8 – almost 30 seconds faster than the runner-up boat. Members of the ODBC Select Crew Girls First 8 include coxswain Brook Teferra and rowers Jessey Willis, Kyra McClary, Maria Justiniano, Kaela Wilbur, Amelia Bender, Mia Cleary, Maeve Bradley and Maura Nakahata.
Showing the depth of the ODBC Select Girls team, five other Girls 8 boats also competed in the head race. All turned in excellent performances, with the Girls’ Second 8 taking sixth place in a heated competition. The girls Second 8 included Elizabeth Roda (coxswain), Lilly Lane, Harper Jensen, Rachael Vannatta, Marissa Shand, Sierra Arnold, Emily De-Bodene, Olivia Anthony and LeeAnn Richards.
The ODBC Select Boys First 4 also rowed a strong race, placing third, with a time of 17.11, only 0.07 seconds behind the second place team. The boat included Preston Tracy, Tyler Souza, Carter Weitekamp, Angelo Leitner-Wise and coxswain Brianna Zuckerman.
The ODBC Select Boys First and Second 8s also turned in solid performances in their first race of the season, with competitive scores of 16:31.9 and 18: 17.2 at the Head of the Potomac.
With just over 82 athletes on the team, this year’s ODBC Select Crew is one of the largest in memory. The athletes – who are drawn from such area high schools as T. C. Williams, Bishop Ireton, West Potomac, J.E.B. Stuart and McLean – are guided this Fall by Head Girls Coach Patrick Marquardt, Assistant Girls Coach Jaime Rubini, Head Boys Coach Audrey Shankles, and Assistant Boys Coach Gracie Barbara.
The ODBC Select Crew’s next race is the Occoquan Challenge, which will be held this Sunday, Oct. 5, at Sandy Run Regional Park.
