School Board Approves 2015-16 School Year Academic Calendar

ACPS logoLast night, the Alexandria City School Board approved the 2015-16 School Year Academic Calendar with a modification to include two full weeks of Winter Break and the Columbus Day holiday. The School Board approved academic calendars for both the traditional and modified calendars, both with 183 instructional days. For the majority of schools that follow the traditional calendar, the first day of the school year for 2015-16 will be Sept. 8, 2015. For Samuel W. Tucker Elementary School, which follows the modified calendar, the first day of the school year is Aug. 6, 2015.

The School Board voted to retain the current 2014-15 policy which allows for flexibility in making up days missed because of inclement weather. The first three snow days will not be made up. Three additional days, if needed, have been identified in the calendar as Feb. 5, March 4 and April 22, 2016, for the traditional calendar, and March 4, March 18 and May 13, 2016, for the modified calendar. If nine or more snow days are missed, total instructional hours will be reviewed to determine if additional minutes need to be added, or if schools have sufficient instructional time to meet state requirements.

The Wednesday before Thanksgiving remains a holiday. Columbus Day, Monday, Oct. 12, 2015, will be a split teacher work day and/or professional development day in both calendars. Election Day, Nov. 3, 2015, will also be a split teacher work day and/or professional development day to accommodate the disruption to classes when schools are used as polling stations. Veterans Day will not be a holiday in either calendar in the 2015-16 school year.

Alexandria City Public Schools teachers and students will have two full weeks off for Winter Break. The last day of school before the summer break will be June 24, 2016.

To ensure maximum consensus on the calendar, ACPS parents and staff were invited to take part in an online survey, the results of which were taken into account by the Calendar Committee and the School Board. The results of the survey indicated a preference for observing two full weeks for Winter Break and observing a full day off the Wednesday before Thanksgiving.

The survey also requested feedback regarding satisfaction with structure and scheduling of parent conferences. Elementary school parent-teacher conferences will be held on Nov. 18, 19 and 20, 2015, and Feb. 10, 11 and 12, 2016, for the traditional calendar and on Oct. 14, 15 and 16, 2015, and Jan. 20, 21 and 22, 2016, for the modified calendar. For parents of middle school students, conferences will be held on Oct. 29 and 30, 2015, and Feb. 25 and 26, 2016. Parents of high school students will have conferences on Oct. 22 and 23, 2015, and Feb. 18 and 19, 2016.

The Calendar Committee was made up of past committee members, parents and staff representatives requested via Daily Digest announcements and Teacher Advisory Council members.
