Winter sports are underway at T. C. Williams High School. A summary follows of contests in basketball, gymnastics, indoor track, swim/dive and wrestling through Dec. 13.

Boys Basketball
After playing Wakefield in the annual Parker-Gray game on Dec. 5, T. C. Williams faced West Springfield High School on the road on Dec. 12. The Titans were down by 15 points at half time but despite a comeback in the second half, lost by four points, 60-64. T. C. junior Tavaris James had 17 points including three three-point baskets; junior Jordan Jones also had 17 points. The Titans play South County at T.C. Williams on Dec. 19, and Edison on the road on Dec. 20 (7:30 p.m.) in doubleheader games with the T. C. girls.

Girls Basketball
After a narrow loss (46-42) to Battlefield High School on Dec. 2, the T. C. girls crushed Hylton High School 64-15, at the Art Turner Memorial Tip-Off Showcase at Paul VI Catholic High School on Dec. 6; sophomore transfer Bhrandi Crenshaw was the leading scorer for T. C. with 17 points. On Dec. 9, the Lady Titans defeated Wakefield on the road 59-44. Senior Grace Peterson scored 20 points; fellow senior Rejoice Spivey scored 16 points and Crenshaw added 14 points. The T. C. girls hosted conference rival West Springfield in The Garden on Dec. 12. The Titans were down 25-20 at half time but had a spark of momentum late in the third quarter. Despite the offensive surge, T. C. could not pull out the victory in the final minutes, losing 42-38. Spivey was the top scorer with 17 points; Peterson contributed 12 points and ten rebounds; Crenshaw added six points. The Lady Titans traveled to Meadowbrook High School in Richmond on Dec. 13. T. C. Williams toppled TPLS Christian Academy (Midlothian, Va.) 67-36; Spivey had 17 points, Crenshaw 14 points and Peterson 11 points. The Titans play South County at T.C. Williams on Dec. 19, and Edison on the road on Dec. 20 (5:45 p.m.).

Gymnastics
The T. C. Gymnastics team competed in two meets last week – against Annandale, Lee, South County, West Potomac and West Springfield on Dec. 8, and against Hayfield, Osbourn, South Lakes, Yorktown and Washingon-Lee on Dec. 11. There are four members on the Titans’ team: seniors Grace Girard and Jordan Mambert, sophomore Cailyn Lager and freshman Schyler Vander Schaaf. The team competes next against Centreville, Langley, Robinson, Thomas Jefferson and Westfield on Dec. 19.

Indoor Track
The first indoor track meet took place at Episcopal High School on Dec. 6; see complete results. T.C. Williams competed against Herndon, McLean and Stuart. The next regional quad meet is at Episcopal on Dec. 20 (7:30 a.m.) against Chantilly, Edison and Oakton. The Titans compete again at the F.I.T. Invitational on Dec. 27, at Prince George’s SportsPlex in Landover, Md.

Swim & Dive
The first meet for T.C. Swim and Dive was against Robert E. Lee on Dec. 5. The Titan boys team won 160-135; the girls lost 103-206. In their Dec. 12 meet against South County, the T. C. boys lost 120-185 and the girls lost 104-204. The boys meet was much closer than in years past and the girls scored better against a powerful South County team than the previous week against Lee. First-place finishers for the night were: Cameron Morey, 200 IM; Alex Heimberg, diving, with a new personal record score of 164.60; Nathan Youmans, 100 Fly, coming in under a minute for the first time at 59.83; Immanuel Cromley, 100 Free and 100 Breast with PR's in both; Brendan Loveng, 500 Free; and Beatrice Greeson, 100 back with a PR of 108.42. Colleen Cox also made her diving debut with a strong score and a 3rd place finish

On Dec. 13, the Titans competed against West Springfield for a double-meet weekend. The T. C. girls lost 95 to 217 and the boys lost 89 to 225. Ben Ruschell dropped 10 seconds from his 200 Free time in just his second time in the event. Mimi Hyre took off 3 seconds in the same event. Nathan Youmans, who finished under a minute in the 100 Fly the previous night, dropped a full second and a half in that event on Saturday. He also took first place in the 100 Breast, and Beatrice Greeson took first in the 100 Back. T. C. Williams competes against West Potomac at Mount Vernon Pool on Dec. 19 before Winter Break.

Wrestling
The T. C. Williams varsity wrestling team competed in the NOVA Classic Invitational Tournament on Dec. 12-13. Senior Majik Nethery was the top finisher for the Titans, taking third place in his weight class. The win-loss records follow for the T. C. wrestlers in each weight class. 106: Alessandro Penalver (1-2); 113: Majik Nethery (6-1); 120: Liam Cousins (2-2); 126: Grayson Beasley (0-2); 132: Andrew Bolton (1-2); 138: Tim Bender (3-2); 145: Grey Zane (1-2); 152: Sarin Suvanasai (1-2); 160: Andrew Patacsil (0-2); 170: Tyler Souza (2-2); 195: Diego Gonzaga (1-2); 285: Daniel Villarroel Lodova (1-2). T. C. Williams competes next in an Invitational Tournament at Woodbridge Senior High School on Dec. 29-30.

Post Season: Cross Country
On Dec. 13, T.C. senior Anteneh Girma competed in the Foot Locker National Championship in San Diego. Girma was one of ten runners representing the 16-state South region after finishing sixth at the regional qualifier in Charlotte, N.C., on Nov. 29.  See related article.
