Alexandria, VA 22301,  The community toy drive will take place at the City of Alexandria's Mt. Vernon Recreation Center at 2701 Commonwealth Avenue, Alexandria, VA 22301.  Volunteers will be needed Friday evening, Dec. 19 and Saturday morning, Dec. 20, to unloard, sort, and inventory toys. Alexandria Dept. of Community and Human Services – Holiday Sharing Family Gift Distribution at DCHS

Alexandria, VA 22301,  Sunday afternoon and weekday mornings and evenings: Check-in sponsors and organize bundles of gifts so they can be easily located. Weekday afternoon and evenings: Check-out families who come in to pick up bundles.  Help load the bundles in the parents' transportation home. Provide transportation for families if needed. Alexandria Dept. of Community and Human Services – Volunteer Advocate

Alexandria, VA 22301,  The City of Alexandria’s Sexual Assault Center is recruiting volunteer advocates for their January class. Volunteers respond to the 24-hour hotline on evenings and weekends. They provide emotional support and information to assist victims in regaining control of their lives. Volunteers also accompany victims of sexual assault to the police department and/or hospital. Our next volunteer training will start January 10th. The training is 40 hours of classroom training on weekends and evenings during the month of January/Feb. Express interest HERE. 

Alexandria Police Foundation - .US National Road Racing

Alexandria, VA 22304, 11/16/14. As you may have heard in recent press releases, the City of Alexandria will host the 2014 United States of America Track and Field (USATF) 12K Championship Race. This event is scheduled for the morning of Sunday, Nov. 16, 2014. This is a significant running event being held in the City and it will attract the nation’s top elite athletes. USATF race organizers have partnered with the Alexandria Police Foundation. The Alexandria Police Foundation is assisting with community outreach and recruiting volunteers for the race. Alexandria Symphony Orchestra – ASO Concert- Dare to Transcend

Alexandria, VA 22311, The Alexandria Symphony Orchestra seeks volunteers for ushering, ticket taking, handing out program books, greeting and concession sales at our Saturday, Nov. 15th concert at the Rachel M. Carpenter’s Shelter – Help Promote Carpenter’s Run for Shelter

Alexandria, VA,  Volunteers are needed to hand out postcards to help promote Carpenter's Shelters Run for Shelter 5k/10k/Fun Run at the Eisenhower Avenue, Ballston, Braddock, Crystal City, Pentagon City, Clarendon, and Court House Metros, Market Square, and Del Ray! The Run for Shelter benefits the Carpenter's Shelter and is an event dedicated to ending homelessness in the DC area. Volunteers are needed from 5 pm-7 pm and this is a great opportunity for all volunteers including kids and teenagers. NVA CASH VITA Tax Program – Volunteer Tax Preparer

Annandale, VA 22003 (17 sites across Northern VA.),  Volunteers are needed in the Northern Virginia region to staff FREE tax preparation sites that will serve low-income families and help them receive needed refunds and tax credits. No experience necessary. All training provided. Volunteers are needed from late January 2015 through April 2015. Training will begin Dec. 2014 and go through January 2015. Sites are generally open on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings from 5 pm to 9 pm and on Saturdays from 10 am until 1 or 3 pm depending on location. Varieties of flexible schedules are available to volunteers and will meet their professional and personal lifestyles. Volunteers may serve as many hours as they wish.  Express interest HERE.

Volunteer Alexandria – Event Volunteers for Volunteers are the Heart of Alexandria

Alexandria, VA 22314,  Volunteer Alexandria is hosting Volunteers are the Heart of Alexandria, an evening to celebrate Alexandria's volunteers, on Nov. 6, 2014 from 6:00-8:30 p.m. at the US Patent and Trademark Office.  The event will include light hors d'oeuvre, a cash bar, networking, a silent auction, and an awards presentation.  This year marks the 20th anniversary of celebrating our volunteers, and we are looking for attentive, cheerful, and motivated individuals to assist us in running the event.  Time slots available are from 3:00-6:30 and 5:30-9:30 p.m.  More information and sign up HERE.

ALIVE! – Food Program Food Drive Coordinator

Alexandria, VA 22302,  ALIVE! is looking for a volunteer to act as the Food Program Food Drive Coordinator. Major duties will include: Take information from groups who Contact ALIVE! And want to conduct a food drive; Evaluate whether ALIVE! can accept the donated food by checking with the Food Co-Chairs to ensure there is adequate space in the warehouse and whether there could be another competing drive at the same time; Respond to organizations that hold food drives and determine what support from ALIVE! Is required. This could include such things as onsite labor, boxes and labels, volunteers, or delivery truck support; Coordinate with the Warehouse Manager to arrange for unload and possible sorting by volunteers.  Express interest and more information HERE. 

ALIVE! – Food Program Shopper

Alexandria, VA 22302, Duties will include working with the ALIVE! Family Emergency Program to understand weekly needs and prepare a shopping request for the Capital Area Food Bank.  The Food Program Shopper will schedule and attend a weekly appointment with the Capital Area Food Bank in order to shop for food supplies requested.  Currently this appointment is on Tuesday but can be changed.  Volunteer will then coordinate with the Family Emergency Program to drop of food at their site or unload at the ALIVE! warehouse.  The Food Program Shopper will also work with volunteers who provide assistance in loading and unloading food supplies in the van.  The position will require approximately 4-5 hours of support each week.  Express interest HERE.

ALIVE! – Food Program Warehouse Assistant

Alexandria, VA 22302, ALIVE! is looking for a volunteer to act as the Food Program Warehouse Assistant. Major Duties include assisting the Food Program Warehouse Manager with the following tasks: Collect banana boxes; Move donated food from First Christian Church/ALIVE! office to the warehouse as needed; Unload donated food to the warehouse; Sort, box and shelve  food according to inventory management system; Accompany the Tuesday Capital Area Food Bank shopper each week to Capital Area Food Bank to help load and unload food items as needed. Duties include: Supervise the Warehouse Assistant; Coordinate with the Food drive Manager and assist with food drives; Coordinate with the two Food Co-chairs to disburse food for programs; Arrange for coverage at the warehouse at delivery and pickup times. Alexandria Black History Museum Reception Volunteer
902 Wythe Street, Alexandria, VA 22314,  Volunteers are needed who have an interest in history, and in particular, Alexandria's African-American history and culture, to staff the reception desk, greet visitors, handle phone calls, and help with special projects. Alexandria Domestic Violence Program — Shelter and Children’s Support Group Volunteers

Volunteers are needed weekends, holidays and during weekdays. Alexandria Redevelopment and Housing Authority’s Senior Center @ Charles Houston – Artist

Alexandria, VA 22314, The center currently has a need for persons who have experience in arts n crafts to include drawing, painting, needlepoint, crocheting, knitting and possibly ceramics/pottery. The ideal candidates should have either talent and or certification in the above and be willing to undergo a criminal background check. Alexandria Redevelopment and Housing Authority’s Senior Center @ Charles Houston – Music Teacher

Alexandria, VA 22314, Volunteer needed to teach seniors music therapy activities. The activities are to include conducting sing-a-longs and forming a choir. The ability to play an instrument is also desired. A criminal background check is required. The senior center will cover the cost for the background check. American Cancer Society – Volunteer Drivers Needed for Cancer Patients . One of the toughest challenges cancer patients face is getting to and from their much-needed chemotherapy and/or radiation treatments. They may be too ill to drive, may not own a car, or may not have anyone to take them to the appointments. The American Cancer Society offers a program called “Road to Recovery,” where cancer patients receive free rides to and from treatment centers. This is where you can help. The American Cancer Society is looking for volunteer drivers who can use their own personal vehicle to drive patients to and from treatment centers. King Street Cats - Adoption Counselors, Cleaner and Feeders

Alexandria, VA 22314, Volunteers are needed for weekly Sat. and Sun. adoptions. The adoption counselors will welcome visitors to the facility and talk to adopters to help them find their purrfect cats. Volunteers are also needed to help with morning and evening feeding of the cats and cleaning the facility. The volunteer would feed the cats, scoop the litter boxes, clean cages and floor. Stop Child Abuse Now (SCAN) — Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) and Parenting Classes Volunteers

Volunteers advocate for children in abuse and neglect cases, custody cases, and cases where a child is in need of services. Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition of Alexandria - Preventing Risky Behaviors Workshop Presenter

Alexandria, VA 22314,  This collaborative workshop sponsored by SAPCA, Alexandria Campaign on Adolescent Pregnancy, and the Gang Prevention and Intervention Task Force helps parents understand why youth engage in risky behaviors. Parents and interested adults learn the warning signs to determine if their teen is using alcohol or drugs, is sexually active, or involved in a gang, and how to prevent and combat these risky behaviors. Make presentations to parents at various community settings, after receiving training from current SAPCA members. Presentation times are between 1.5 and 2 hours. Presentations are often scheduled through ACPS's Family and Community Engagement Centers.  Express interest HERE. 

Travelers Aid – Volunteers Needed

The volunteer role will utilize your love of socialization (by putting you in Contact with many different types of people,) your management skills (by letting you take the lead on aspects of Outreach,) and your adventurous spirit (because no two events are alike!).  Requirements:  We are looking for an average of approximately 5-10 hours per week, usually between one or two days. Threshold Choir

We offer the gift of song at the bedsides of those who are at the threshold of living and dying, coming by invitation in groups of 2-4 singers. Our gentle songs bring ease and comfort to clients, family and caretakers. Rehearsals are held twice a month form 7 9 pm in Northwest DC.
