As the Alexandria Singers performed a medley of popular Disney songs during Del Ray’s First Thursday, volunteers from the Alexandria Battered Women’s Shelter collected items to help make the shelter a more welcoming place, in hopes of bringing a song in every child’s heart.
During the August First Thursday, Del Ray celebrated the performing arts in the community with the theme “Music and Dance on the Avenue,” featuring a wide variety of performers along Mount Vernon Avenue.  The Del Ray Business Association selected the Alexandria Battered Women’s Shelter as this month’s featured nonprofit, and collected  items to help make the house a home after its recent renovation.
“The Alexandria Battered Women’s Shelter was recently renovated, and it looks spectacular!” said Friends of the Alexandria Commission for Women President Pat Miller.  “Now we need to make the Shelter a home for those that unfortunately reside there.  We need to create a space that is warm and welcoming, and most of all: SAFE.”
Donations are still being accepted; for more information on giving, including a link to the Target registry featuring items selected for the shelter by a team of designers, visit
Held the first Thursday of the month from April to September along Mount Vernon Avenue in the Del Ray neighborhood of Alexandria, First Thursday is a series of free outdoor street festivals that bring the community together around a fun theme, benefiting a local nonprofit. The year’s final First Thursday is on Sept. 1, with the theme “Health and Wellness On The Avenue.”
