At its monthly meeting yesterday, the Commonwealth Transportation Board awarded a $5.6 million contract for reconstruction of the Backlick Road bridge over the CSX Railroad in Newington.

Shirley Contracting Company of Lorton received the contract to replace the existing two-lane bridge with a slightly higher one that accommodates the addition of new railroad tracks as part of the Commonwealth’s Atlantic Gateway Project

The project’s other improvements include:

  • Wider shared-use path on bridge
  • New pavement on both ends of the bridge
  • New curb and gutter on the southern approach to the bridge
  • Wider entry at the north end of the bridge to provide more room for vehicles, particularly trucks

Work is expected to begin later this fall and be complete in spring 2019. Visit the VDOT project page for more information.
